Chapter 6

Suds

It takes most of the night for the Feds to clear things with the hotel. Using some national securities act, the Waldorf agrees to declare the alarm went off due to faulty wiring. Hopefully, Oblonsky will believe the substitute reasoning and dismiss the evening as bad luck.

I knock on their door in the morning and relax when the nanny opens it with a welcoming smile.

Stacy, dressed as some kind of superhero, jumps off the couch, zooms across the room, and hugs my knees. “It’s Halloweeeeeen!”

Her father lowers the Wall Street Journal and glares at me over his reading glasses. “Precisely what happened last night?”

“The room below mine had a short in the ceiling.” My poker face is pretty damn good but it’s not until his gaze flicks to his paper that my heartbeat normalizes.

“I appreciate how quickly you arrived.”

“Yes sir. It’s what you pay me to do.” My adrenaline finishes dissipating as he folds his newspaper and dabs the edges of his mouth with a linen napkin.

Then, his daughter flies back across the room, hops in his lap, and puts her lips to his cheek. “I want to march in the real parade.”

“Sorry, dumpling, it’s far too dangerous.” His eyes warm and the lines around them soften as he kisses the top of her head.

“No it’s not. I’m Magique. I’ve got super powers.” She zooms around the kitchen. “Vroom, vroom.”

“Nyet. Maybe next year, da?”

“No, Daddy.” Her irises reflect the red LED’s in the microwave and flash as she stomps her cute, pink sneakers.

If Stacy goes into full tantrum, she’ll be late so I lift her high in the air.

When she giggles and forgets her demands, I turn toward her father. “Is there anything else you need, sir?”

Vladimir sighs heavily. “I may need a ride later. Stay in touch.”

“Copy that. C’mon witch-girl. They’ll have a parade at your school. You don’t want to miss it.”

“I’m not a witch. I’m an X-girl.” She shoves her arms through the coat held out by her caregiver. “Bye, Daddy.”

Dropping her off, I return to the hotel to research Oblonsky. Around two, finding nothing, I log off, and bring him to Stacey’s kiddie parade. When we return, I swipe my keycard. The hair I left in the doorframe lies at my feet.

Shit. It could be a maid, but I left the do not disturb card on the door handle.

Slowly I enter, open the door, and point my weapon.

Ah hell. My wife sits at my small kitchenette table typing away on her laptop. “Good. You’re back. We need to talk.”

“Mmm.” Leaning over, I kiss her cheek.

She turns her head and I capture her mouth until she squirms to break it off. “Sex-in-a-hotel is great but first, I need your help. Last night, I had a visit from a guy named Jack Fialko.”

“Doesn’t ring a bell.” I cup her lovely breasts and bother a nipple.

She reaches over her head and brings my lips to hers. “The man must be worth millions, maybe billions.”

“What did he want?” I’m thinking we should take this conversation into the bedroom.
